Active Learning is very much a small friendly collection of independent nurseries and each is individual rather than simply a link in a corporate chain.

We pride ourselves on allowing each school to develop its own personality and for the staff, children and parents to create a local atmosphere which reflects the area and character of those who are part of that school.

Active Learning was set up in 2005 in response to the changing environment of nursery education and care. It was set up by an experienced team of professionals who have operated in this sector since 1992.

There have been immense changes in nursery provision over this time with dramatic growth in large group organisations who offer many benefits that are outside of the scope of the smaller provider.

However, it is difficult for a larger organisation to maintain that personal touch, the sense of being a fundamental part of the local community and with it, the bond that exists between nursery and home, bridging the transition that the child makes every day.

Active Learning was set up to offer the best in both worlds, to offer again that personal service so often missing but in a group which will never exceed 10 to 15 nurseries.

Nursery education had also changed. The emphasis in early years provision is much more focussed on children aged under 3 ½ as more children move into their big schools at this time. Educational curricula have had to change therefore to reflect this but in many cases, the result is that some nurseries are offering a babysitting service rather than a proactive fun programme for this age group which instills the fundamental educational foundations for strong early learning skills in literacy, numeracy and educational awareness. Much of a person’s intellect and personality is formed in the first three years of life, and the quality of care and instruction they receive during this time is key to the development of who they become as adults.

At Active Learning we believe that helping a child to be confident, happy, healthy and adventurous is a key to their future success in making that transition into school life and beyond. Much of the learning and education in our daily curriculum is achieved through active pursuits, as well as through offering a wealth of creative and other interactive opportunities to enjoy new discoveries through fun-filled music, sports, dance and art sessions, in addition to some of the more standard nursery activities.

Unlike any other nursery, we offer specialist art, dance and music facilities presided over by qualified specialists in these fields. We offer integrated IT and science and an unprecedented opportunity to try out all sorts of pre school early sports. This is a nursery where we very much believe in bringing the outdoors in!

Whereas some nurseries offer a little taste of some dance or sport or music, our nursery revolves around it. It’s a little like a Performing Arts School for little ones. Since children are often at their most creative at this age, acting out stories, singing, making up songs, surely this has to be their dream environment where they are encouraged to do this all day long.

Too often, parents are put themselves under pressure first choosing childcare and then sourcing and managing the logisitics of extracurricular activities for their child to participate in – music lessons, art, lessons, drama, ballet, PE, tennis, and other sports. Children are stressed by having too many activities outside their time in the nursery.

Active Learning believes that children should be children. By incorporating a wide range of these activities into the nursery as part of our normal day, tailoring specifically to a child’s individual interests and abilities, we help children to have more free time outside the nursery – to play and relax. And what’s more, there are no additional extracurricular costs!

Active Learning caters for children aged from 3 months to 5 years and was established to provide a fresh approach to child care and nursery education. It was set up by a professional team who have 15 years experience in this field and who understand how nurseries and pre school education have changed over this time.
